One Killed, 26 Injured as Private Bus Overturns on Kerala Highway Amid Heavy Rain
A private Kozhikode-Thrissur bus overturned on National Highway 66 near Kuttippuram in Kerala's Malappuram district during heavy monsoon rains, killing one passenger and injuring 26. Authorities are investigating the crash as safety concerns grow.
The crash occurred at around 11 a.m. when the bus skidded for more than 25 meters, struck a road divider, and overturned. The accident took place amid heavy rainfall, with the bus losing control before crashing.
The passenger who died was identified as Vaishnav from Kozhikode. A total of 26 other passengers sustained injuries in the accident, including three who were reported to be in critical condition. Rescue teams cut through the wreckage of the overturned bus to free the trapped passengers.
State Transport Minister C.P. John said high speed was a likely factor behind the accident. Police and the Motor Vehicles Department have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The incident has also renewed calls for improved bus safety measures, including the use of speed governors during the monsoon season, as authorities continue their probe into the fatal accident.
